A Titanic Love Story: Approach to Marxist Criticism

“There is no danger that the Titanic will sink. The ship is unsinkable and the passengers will suffer nothing but inconvenience” (Philip Franklin), were words that had gone down in history. The Titanic, dubbed the “IMMOBILIZABLE”, ironically sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It was known as the ship of dreams. Surely it was. The film Titanic was considered the second highest grossing film and was directed by James Cameron. It was a dramatization of the unfortunate sinking of the most famous ship in 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic spanning the love story of two fictional characters, Jack Dawson and Rose Bukater. It centers on the love story of first-class passenger Rose Bukater and third-class passenger Jack Dawson. The gap between the poor and the rich and how social class affects one’s life and what the two lovers will do for their love despite social differences was largely shown in the film.

84 years after the sinking of the ship Unsinkable; A 100-year-old lady reveals her life story set on April 10, 1912 on the Titanic ship when a young woman, Rose Bukater, along with her mother, Ruth Bukater, and her fiance, Caledon Hockley, who belongs to the top class passengers, embarked on the departing ship. Meanwhile, young Jack Dawson, along with his friend, Fabrizio De Rossi, fortunately won third-class tickets to the ship in a game. Jack and Rose met when Rose tries to kill herself by jumping on deck because she is distraught over her engagement between Caledon Hockley. Rose was discovered with Jack, and she told them that he saved her life, so Caledon felt compelled to invite Jack to dinner. Jack realizes that Rose favors him more than Caledon. Rose takes Jack to her room and asks him to draw her. Caledon went to find Rose and ended up looking at the sketch along with a note from Jack and the necklace. Jack and Rose witnessed the collision of the iceberg and the ship and when they came to inform Caledon and the others, Caledon secretly put the necklace in Jack’s pocket and charged him with theft. The ship began to sink and from the lifeboat, Rose flees to save and free Jack. Cal and Jack convinced Rose to get on the lifeboat for Cal, claiming that he and Jack can get off safely. As the ship descended, Rose realized that she couldn’t leave Jack, so she jumped back onto the ship. Cal couldn’t believe what Rose did and goes after Jack and Rose with a gun. Cal also noticed that the necklace is on the coat he gave Rose. The boat began to sink and the passengers fell to their deaths. Jack and Rose jumped into the ocean. Jack died of hypothermia and Rose survived.

Since the beginning of the film, the gap between social classes had been observed. The film is a representation of classes. On the ship itself, show where it was divided into three according to its class. Show the different treatments between classes. In the film, passengers with the same social class must group together. It shows how the upper class looks down on the lower class. As if Rose was forbidden to meet with Jack due to the difference in social class. Despite this, Jack and Rose still break tradition and try to stand in the line between the poor and the rich. Ruth Bukater insists that Rose marry Caledon Hockley because he is rich and can help them financially. There is also a scene where Jack was accused of robbery, they pointed out his social status for the crime. When the ship sinks, the passengers of the upper class were more likely to survive and were the priority. Lifeboats were not filled where they can hold more passengers and can save lives. the lower class was locked in the bottom of the ship because the upper class had priority to board the lifeboats. The conflict by social class created a love story that conquered everything just to be together until the last breath.

I consider Titanic to be one of the best romantic movies of all time. The uncomplicated story, the characters, the special effects and the addition of the musical theme make it more impressive. It is not a clichéd love story in which they will live happily ever after. You can see and feel the enormous power of love. This movie really triggers your deepest emotions. I may have seen it many times, but it still gives me the excitement and suspense despite knowing what will happen. The character renderings were impressive and Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have great chemistry. There are scenes that really bring tears to my eyes, they were even only shown for a few seconds and did not focus on Jack and Rose. It is the scene in which the musicians decide to go back to their partner and continue to play music, as well as the scene in which two old men lay in bed and a mother consoling her two children. It gives me hope that true love really exists and can conquer and overcome everything, even if it means losing your life, just for love. Congratulations to everyone who made this movie.
