Does oily hair cause more shedding?

The other day, I got an email asking, “I’ve noticed my hair is a lot oilier lately. Could that be why more hair is falling out? Or could it have made my hair oilier? A correlation between my oiliest hair and my hair loss “. In reality, there are many reasons why this may be happening. I will discuss them in the next article.

Oily hair, androgens and hair loss / hair loss: The most obvious answer here is that oily hair is the result of excess sebum, DHT, or androgens. This could be the result of genetics finally rearing its ugly head. It could also be the result of a medical problem that causes excess androgen production. Examples of this are polycystic ovary syndrome, some endocrine disorders, or an excess of cortisol (in both men and women) or testosterone (in women). Many people with genetic shedding, hair loss, or thinning are sensitive to androgens. It is not necessarily that they produce more of these substances than normal. It is that they are too sensitive to them, so even a little can cause more loss or shedding.

Sometimes medications can cause androgenic responses. An example would be if you changed the birth control pills and the new ones contain more progesterone (this can cause an androgenic effect in some). You can have the same reactions at certain times of the month (for women). approaching your period, you sometimes have more breakouts or oil on your face and hair as you have more progesterone to deal with.

Inflammation due to shedding and hair loss: Another possibility is that your scalp (and therefore your hair) is reacting to inflammation which is probably the result of many hairs entering the resting phase at the same time. This happens when you are losing a lot (telogen effluvium). Your scalp may turn red, red, or angry. As a result, your body produces more oils and sebum in an attempt to calm your scalp or counteract inflammation. Of course, this can sometimes make the problem worse if you are sensitive to these things as I have described them.

Are your hair strands getting thinner ?: Sometimes I get people to tell me that their hair is getting more limp and greasy when what is really happening is that they are having a bit of hair miniaturization (where their hair starts to grow thinner and finer, usually due to AGA). And these flaccid and fine hair is not able to withstand the same amount of natural oils that were always there because the locks are smaller, thinner and in diameter and they are becoming saturated and heavy. In this case, I often tell people to use their conditioner before shampooing and to be careful when using heavy products. You will also need to shampoo regularly to prevent fine hair from becoming limp and sticking to your head and to keep your scalp healthy.

Are you avoiding washing your hair for fear that it will fall out more ?: Speaking of regular washing, I think it is very common, when you experience hair loss or hair loss, to think about washing your hair less often. It may seem logical that when you lose tons of hair every time you wash it, you think it might be a good idea to wash it less. This can backfire because it can make a bad situation worse.

You must keep your scalp clean and hair follicles unobstructed to promote healthy, thick growth. The appearance of your hair depends on both how much it comes out and how much it grows back. It will damage your growth if you don’t keep your scalp as clean as it needs to be. And anyway, the hairs that are coming out when you shampooed were going to come out soon anyway and there is nothing you can do to prevent them coming out once you are in the resting phase. (It is in phase for a few weeks before it falls off.) So even though you may think that loss is being avoided by skipping a shampoo or two, you could be doing more long-term damage than you think.
